Published by the Macmillan Company, New Phillpotts has shown considerable skillin the construction of a first-class novel fromcommonplace material. He has, in otherwords, relied upon a genuine power of char-acter analysis rather than upon the conven-tional aids of modern and artificial life. Wedelight in his characters because they areintensely human and because they are the un-warped product of simple conditions. The scene is laid in Dartmoor, and whilethe dramatis persona are numerous and of adelightful variety, there are three figures,those of three brothers, who stand out clearand bold against the sky line.
