Working since he was nine years in the trade in Funchal, began in the literary career, becoming known for his poetic compositions. It is characterized as scathing photographer, critic, ahead of his time; free thinker " who did not hesitate to express in rhyme, their views often contrary to the prevailing morality . " After his work in trade, entered the seminary of that city, from which it was excluded as a suspect of belonging to freemasonry, being arrested by order of the bishop. Sick, poor and seeing his work constantly rejected by editors and critics, Francisco Álvarez de Nobrega, now in his friend José Manuel Pinto Moreira Baptista, commits suicide by ingesting an overdose of laudanum. Much of his work was simply destroyed by the Inquisition, with its sparse poems that have persisted to the present day.
