ESRF. General view of the interior of the main building of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) at Grenoble, France. The ESRF uses synchrotron radiation emitted as a result of electrons being accelerated around a storage ring (below service pipes in foreground). The radiation is emitted in the form of ultraviolet light and X- rays, which are then used for a variety of experiments in fields as varied as solid state physics, materials science, chemistry, biology and medicine. At the time of its inauguration on 30 September 1994, the ESRF was the world's brightest source of X-rays.
