AcCELEKATING INFLUENCE OF RUST It is a generally accepted belief that rust having once formedupon an iron surface this adhering rust exerts an acceleratinginfluence upon the subsequent rate of rust formation: that theadherent rust instead of acting as a protection has a reverseinfluence. The tests above recorded present data from which a quanti-tative idea of the influence of this factor may be derived. Sam-ples marked (a) and (d) in tables I and II were exposed to twosuccessive periods of rusting, the rust having been removed atthe end of each period. At the same time similar test pieces(b) and (e) were exposed without disturbance, for the entire 139 Days 300 Days 139 Days Atmospheric Corrosion—Open Hearth Steel PlateFig. 2. 139 Days 300 Days 139 Days Fume Corrosion—Open Hearth Steel PlateFig. 3 Swedish Iron—Low Carbon Areas with SlagFig. 4 X70 Swedish Iron—Medium Carbon Area with SlagFig. 5 X70 Swedish Iron—Junction of Medium and Low Carbon Areas with Slag Lines Fig. 6 X70 High Purity Iron—Good Clean Ferrite StructureFig. 7 - ,v . * =, -4 * i - * - ; # . ; V. ^ 1 * ...
