The US Navy oli supply ship USS Neosho is left burning and slowly sinking at the completion of the Japanese dive bombing attack during the Battle of the Coral Sea in May 1942. The ship was kept afloat long enough for the crew to be rescued and was then sunk by the rescue ship, the destroyer USS Henley
