Red Royal Ensign flag flying against a deep blue sky. The red ensign is a flag that originated from the early 17th century and was used by the Royal Navy. The Merchant Shipping Act in 1854 included a specific provision that the Red Ensign was the appropriate flag for a British merchantman and today it is still used by todays UK Merchant Navy.
