Alphonse Bertillon (1853-1914) French police officer. In 1880, when Chief of the Paris identification bureau, Bertillon devised a method of identifying criminals using anthropometric measurements. It was used for a number of years, but was replaced by fingerprinting. Photo by Nadar, Paris, c1880.
