It was the New York jewelers Tiffany's that christened this blue stone and gave it the name Tanzanite when it first appeared on the world market in 1962 Mined in a small area 50km south of Kilimanjaro near the town of Mererani northern Tanzania Most of the stones are mined by a South African mining company however dozens of unofficial mines have been sunk in the hills surrounding the town Un-propped and unlit the mines provide hundreds of young Tanzanians with unpaid work
