Uzbekistan: A ceiling detail from the iwan or covered portico at Bolo Hauz Mosque, Bukhara. The Bolo Hauz Mosque was built in 1712 and was used as a royal mosque by the Emir of Bukhara. The mosque's iwan or covered portico is still one of the highest and most beautiful in Central Asia. Bukhara was founded in 500 BCE in the area now called the Ark. However, the Bukhara oasis had been inhabited long before. The city has been one of the main centres of Persian civilisation from its early days in 6th century BCE. From the 6th century CE, Turkic speakers gradually moved in.
