At the universityhe studied especially law and one year and a half he foughttwenty-five duels. After passing hisexaminations he received a position inthe State employ. But the dry le-gal work was not to his taste. Hehated it, for his wild nature desiredaction. The treadmill of routinewas stifling to him. He served his. BISMARCK year in the army and then resignedhis state position. In his blood wasthe longing to live in the countryas his fathers had done, in the count-ry over which lay the blue haze ofthe distant hills. For years Bismarck managed thecountry estates that fell to his heri-tage. He had left the university anunbeliever—had not prayed in manyyears. The people of his regionwere very religious, and so it is easyto understand that Bismarck waslooked at askance by many. Astime went on many stories of sinisternature were circulated about the wild said that he awakened hisguests by shooting a pistol bulletthrough the ceiling.
