As a thank-offering, Sir John asked inhis will that every year on October 16th a sermon shouldbe preached in St. Catherine Cree Church, in LeadenhallStreet. TILDEN FO THE RED DEER THE Red Deer, or Stag, is a well-known Europeananimal, and one of the most beautiful and graceful ofall the deer species. In ancient times it used to be veryplentiful in the British Isles, and fossil remains arefound in nearly all the old caverns and in many otherplaces throughout Europe. But at the present time, in this country the Red Deeris only found in Devon, Exmoor Forest, the Highlands ofScotland, and in Gonnemara and Kerry. The Red Deer ofPerthshire are remarkably fine, strong animals; very quickand alert, and they sometimes weigh as much as twenty-fivestone. Some years ago, the late Prince Consort sent a fewfine specimens out to New Zealand, where they not onlythrive wonderfully, but grow very strong and big. The RedDeer of the Continent are also rather finer animals thanthose that live in Britain to-day, but no country can producesuch fine animals as those we used to have.
