The rest of tlie walls is occupied, as usual, witha variety of arabesque and capricious ornaments, upon red,white, yellow, and green grounds. This, and the Corinthianatrium, and the peristyle of the house of Meleager, to be de-scribed presently, are the most beautiful apartments yet foundin Medea meditating the Murder of her Children. A noble exedra, or summer triclinium, 48, opens on theupper end of the colonnade. Formerly the pavement wasincrusted with precious marbles, as appears from the frag-ments which have been found, of those scarce and beautifulkinds called rosso and giallo antico, African marble with 414 POMPEII. red spots, and oriental alabaster ; but this high-prized orna-ment has been removed, as is almost invariably the case, bythe ancients themselves. Nearly the v/hole front was opento the court, and might be closed at pleasure by large foldingdoors, as the marble sockets in which they turned still large window opens on the covered walk beside the contiguous rooms, 49 and 50, appear to be a bedchamberand anteroom.
