IHE A MONSTER THE Baltimore & Ohio Railroad hasplaced an order with the AmericanLocomotive Company for a tandemcompound locomotive that will be, whencompleted, the heaviest ever built in thiscountry. It is known as the Mallet Articu-lated type, and modified examples are beingused abroad to some extent, none, how-ever, being of the tremendous size of theB. & 0. engine. The cut shows a peculiar arrangementof the drivers and cylinders. The forwardcylinder is the high pressure, while therear one is the low pressure, and the greatpower of the engine is apparent when itis noticed that the entire weight of thelocomotive, 285,000 pounds, is on thedrivers.
