We had an excellent level floor made of fine sandand clay baked in the sun. The tins of preservedfood were now unpacked and disposed in several tiersall round the inside of the tent close to the canvas,thus taking very little room and being safely stowedaway. Our two beds were placed so as to leave apassage between them in which there was just roomfor a small table. We had soon picked up enoughwood for a large fire, which crackled merrily, sendingup wreaths of light-coloured smoke; water was fetched.
