Poland lost its independence in 1795, Cracow being annexed by the Austrian-Hungarian Empire. After a period of the free city of Cracow, 1815-1846, Cracow was once more annexed by the Austrians. Austrian troops left Wawel Hill between 1905 and 1911. Poland regained its independence in 1919. The Latin inscription above the arch refers to restoration in 1827. The date stone above the inscription refers to restoration in 1919.
