Welsh Highland Railway, Wales. Picturesque view of a 1958 narrow gauge Beyer, Peacock and Company built steam locomotive at Rhyd Ddu railway station. The pulling locomotive is number 138 and is painted in a crimson lake livery. The Welsh Highland Railway (WHR) runs a scheduled timetable on a twenty-five mile route between Porthmadog and Caernarfon. This image shows the trip from Porthmadog to Caernarfon in the Snowdonia National Park. Prior to its amalgamation to the WHR for primarily leisure and tourism purposes, the original use of the narrow gauge railway lines was the transportation of slate from the slate mines. The WHR is owned and managed by the Ffestiniog Railway Company which is believed to be the oldest surviving railway company in the world.
