Newborn blue wildebeest (Connochaetes taurinus), or brindled gnu, being licked by its mother. Most blue wildebeest young are born within a 3 week period near or at the peak of the rainy season. 1 calf is born after a gestation of 8 to months. The calf is able to stand after only 6 minutes and able to run and keep up with the herd after a matter of hours. At 8 months old the calf will leave its mother to join a peer group. Wildebeest inhabit the plains and woodlands of south-eastern Africa. They are social animals, living in herds numbering several thousands of individuals. Both sexes grow short curved horns.
