Muddy Gateway, Tractor Tyre Tracks and Waterlogged Fields Beside the River Torridge, Torrington, Devon.

Detailed view of waterlogged fields beside the River Torridge in Torrington. The fields are covered in tractor tyre marks where access has been made through a gap in the hedge, site of a former gateway. The problem with heavy agricultural machinery is that it can compact the soil increasing problems with drainage. The field nearest the river floods frequently but the others have been saturated by unusually heavy rain in the winter of 2015. The river Torridge which flows alongside starts its life on Woolley Moors between Bradworthy and Morwenstow. After completing a long loop it meets the Taw at Appledore then flows out into the Bristol Channel. It is famous for its setting in ‘Tarka the Otter’ by Henry Williamson and more lately in ‘Flow’ a novel for young adults by John Insull.
