Heaven Lake, or Tianche, is a stunningly beautiful location in the eastern part of the Tianshan Mountains (Heaven Mountains), a relatively short distance northeast of Urumqi, capital of Xinjiang Autonomous Region, in northwest China. Although the region is generally quite arid, the Tianshan are just high enough to catch moisture from Siberia, providing winter snow, and generating both lakes and forests. This area is protected within the Heaven Lake Nature Reserve. It is a hugely popular visitor attraction.
