Composite photograph of palaeoanthropologist Louis Leakey (1903-1972) and the type specimen Homo habilis, or 'handy man', which was discovered at Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania, in 1960 and described in 1964. The photograph shows some of the remains of Homo habilis resting on the original reports describing the find. The fossilized bones consist of skull fragments, a jaw bone with teeth and handbones. An article on Louis Leakey, which appeared in National Geographic, is visible in the background. Homo habilis is thought to be the oldest representative of the genus Homo and is dated at million years old.
