He practiced lawin Cincinnati, served inthe state senate 1854-55,and from 1856 until 1865sat in Congress as a Dem-ocrat. In 1864 he wasnominated for Vice-Pres-ident of theUnited Stateson the Democratic ticketheaded by George From 1879;until March, 1885, hewas United States Sen-ator from Ohio, and inthe latter year was ap-pointed by President Cleveland minister to Ger-many.
