Art forgery detection. Forged painting seen under an ultraviolet light. This is a copy of a painting by Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472-1553). The ultraviolet light causes the painting to fluoresce, or emit visible light in response to the ultraviolet light it is absorbing. However the dark area to the right of the woman's head and the numerous other dark specks are not fluorescing. These areas have been retouched or painted over. This work is being carried out at the Doerner Institute in Munich, Germany, which is headed by Dr Andreas Burmester. The Institute specializes in the detection of art forgeries by various imaging techniques and chemical analyses.
