ABOUT the first of May it became evident that General Grantwas about ready to commence his destruction of LeesArmy. He had now about 100,000 men (99,438) in theArmy of the Potomac, inckiding the Cavalry and Artillery, theyhaving been largely reinforced with new regiments, many beingrelieved from their sinecure positions guarding the fortificationsaround Washington, their full ranks contrasting greatly with ourveteran regiments, some of these regiments having about as manymen as one of our entire brigades.
