Inside a cave fortress near Ihlara in the Cappadocia region of Turkey. The landscape in Cappadocia was formed from compacted volcanic ash called "tuff" that smothered the land some 30 million years ago. Natural forces have since sculpted a wonderland of ridges, canyons and bizarre phallic protrusions known as fairy chimneys. Due to the soft stone that makes dugging caves easy people have used these since prehistoric times for houses and fortifications.
