Ippollits church, Hertfordshire, dedicated to the Christian martyr St Hippolytus (loosed horse). In Medieval times, in hope of a miraculous cure, sick horses were led through this north porch to the saint's shrine inside the church. The saint's legend says he was martyred in AD235, torn apart by wild horses roped to his limbs.
