Thus the agreement made withthe Indians fifteen years before was to be carried was the first regular grant made by the federalgovernment with a view to promote the settlementand defence of Michigan.^- Twenty thousand dollarsalso were appropriated for the improvement of theroad built by the soldiers from Detroit to the Maumee.^^In 1827 the first stage coach line between Detroit andOhio was established.^ Previous to this date the mailto and from Detroit was carried on horseback throughthe Black Swamp.^^ About 1820 settlers began to push inland from theDetroit River^*^ and with the great immigration follow-ing the opening of the Erie Canal, roads to the interiorbecame absolutely essential. After 1825 several roadswere projected to lead out of Detroit. Congress ap-propriated three thousand dollars for the laying outof a road from Detroit to Chicago.^^ Two years late
