Knight in armour, painted to left of door on Renaissance frescoed facade of the Palazzo Geremia in Trento, Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy.

Palazzo Geremia, Trento, Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy: armoured knight on Renaissance frescoed facade. The Renaissance Palazzo Geremia is on Via Belenzani (formerly Contrada Larga) and, like other palaces on the same street, shows Venetian influence. It was built towards the end of the 1400s / early 1500s as a residence for Giovanni Antioio Pona, son of Veronese noble Geremia Pona, and his wife Elisabetta Calepini, adapting existing medieval buildings for the purpose. The oriental carpets in the fresco emphasise Palazzo Geremia’s association with an important merchant trader. The 1500s frescos painted on Palazzo Geremia’s facade depict scenes frequently witnessed in Via Belenzani when VIPs (emperors, princes etc.) passed through the town en route to and from Germany. Emperor Maximilian (Massimilano d’Austria) stayed in the palace in 1508 - 1509. Trento was formerly part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and was annexed by Italy in 1919.
