St Martin In The Fields from south west; by James Gibbs 1720-26.

St Martin-in-the-Fields, Trafalgar Square, London. Church designed by James Gibbs 1720, completed 1726 in the English Baroque style. West portico has giant Corinthian columns supporting a pediment with the Hanoverian Royal coat of Arms. Behind the portico, over the west end of the nave, rises a square tower topped by an octagonal steeple , with a delicate concave spire of four octagonal stages, each with a circular opening. Gibbs wrote that the separate elements of a steeple should 'gradually diminish, and pass from one Form to another without confusion'.
