There seems also no reasonable doubt but that itwas in front of one of the lateral porticoes of thisbuilding that King Ahasuerus (Xerxes) made a. feast unto all the people that were present in Shu-shan the palace, both unto great and small, sevendays in the court of the garden of the kings palace ;where were white, green, and blue hangings, fastenedwith cords of fine linen and purple to silver ringsand pillars of marble: the beds were of gold andsilver upon a pavement of red and blue and whiteand black marble (Esth. i. 5, 6). From thisit is evident that the feast took place, not in theinterior of any hall, but out of doors, in tentserected in one of the courts of the palace, such aswe may easily fancy existed in fiont of either theeastern or western porches of the great centralbuilding. The whole of this great group of buildings wasraised on an artificial mound, nearly square in plan,measuring about 1000 feet each way, and rising toa height apparently of 50 or 60 feet above theplain.
