British Honor Coast Guard Officer. Coast Guard Lieut. Comdr. Louis I. Reilly, of 79 Crystal Avenue, Port Richmond, Staten Island, , has been awarded the British Distinguished Service Cross--second highest English Medal Honor--for his "gallantry, skill and undaunted devotion to duty" when he commanded the only American LST group assigned to the British Navy for the Normandy Invasion. Receiving honors at home as well, Lieut. Comdr. Reilly was commended by Rear Admiral Stanley V. Parker, 3rd Naval District Coast Guard Officer, for his "commendable zeal, courage and efficiency" in rescuing 90 survivors from two burning vessels and preventing fire-disaster along the Staten Island waterfront on 5 February, 1945. In the Normandy smash, his ship landed the famed British Seventh Armored Division--The "Desert Rats," famous in the defeat of Rommel's Afrika Korps. Prior to that action Lt. Comdr. Reilly participated in landings at Taranto, Manfredonia on the Italian coast, and at Akyab in Burma. A veteran of 25 years service, the 48-year-old Coast Guard Officer has seen duty on the Greenland patrol aboard a Coast Guard combat cutter performing anti-sub and convoy duty. Comdr. Reilly, whose wife and five children reside at the Staten Island address, now serves in the 7th Naval District, Miami, Fla.
