I happen to be detained here awaiting the return of the regiment from Red River, having been in St. Louis for the last four months on recruiting Service. Some days ago I Saw a young man belonging to another company of our regiment, and who was also wounded in the Same engagement with your Son. He Says that David was on the Same boat with him, and that he knew him well. and also States that he was doing well until the day previous to his death, when he became rapidly worse and died the following day ? The young man informs me that David died Some distance below Vicksburg on Hospital boat ?ǣ Wood ? about the 3rd of this month. ? He does not know where he was buried nor does he know the name of the attending Surgeon, who alone could give any Satisfactory information on the matter ? In losing your Son his officers have lost an obedient, faithful and trustworthy soldier, his comrades a kind and pleasant companion, His country one of its noblest defenders, and his parents a brother and Sister. alas, their grief stricken hearts alone can tell what they have lost ? I Sincerely Sympathise with you in this bereavement, which is indeed a most trying one. and I trust that ?ǣHe who doeth all things well ? will comfort you in this trying affliction ?
