The engines are simple, with 191^x26in. cylinders and 58 in. driving unique feature of these engines isthe throttle riging. As will be seen inour half tone illustration and moreclearly in the line engraving, the throt-tle stem passes out through the domecover and all the rods and connectionsare, therefore, easy to get at, and arealways within reach. This arrange-ment was designed to obviate the trou-ble occasioned by the ordinary throt-tle rod becoming disconnected insidethe boiler. All screw connections havebeen avoided and the stuffing box be-ing in the dome cap causes any leak-. Evensupposing the side strains caused in thismanner result in the breakage of acoupler only once in a while neverthe-less there can be no difierence of opin-ion as to the bad practice of allowingabnormal and destructive forces to existif they do not always reach the breakingpoint. Mr. Forsythe took for an example atrain of freight cars, each 38 ft. 6 and equipped with the regularM. C. B. coupler and draw gear. Asthis train passes round a single curve, such as are common on main lines, eachdraw bar should be allowed at least 2ins. clearance on each side. Let thistrain pass round a reverse
