Slavonice, South Bohemia, Czechia: sgraffito on Renaissance facade of a burgher or town house on Horni náměstí (Upper Square) in the historic centre of the town. The house displaying this portrait is Horni náměstí 520, which dates from the second half of the 1500s. Its facade is decorated mainly with figurative and ornamental sgraffito placed in decorative frames. This portrait is in a horizontal band of sgraffito at first floor level. The band is divided into individual fields, with the coat of arms of Zacharias of Hradec in the middle of the band and portraits of six unidentified half-figures in the band’s other fields. The unidentified figures, which include the man portrayed in this image, may be Austrian archdukes from the Habsburg family. Slavonice, a small town lying close to the Austrian border, in the historical region of Moravia, was founded in the 1100s CE and expanded in the 1300s. It owes its current appearance to the building and rebuilding of many houses in the 1500s, when the town was established as a post stage between Prague and Vienna.
