During the time engaged in the operation,the patients look most miserable beings, thewounded parts swollen and inflamed, anddisplaying as yet none of the elegant patternwhich has been traced on them. The ladshobble about in all sorts of contorted atti-tudes, fanning away the flies with flappersmade of white masi, and doing all in theirpower to alleviate the pain. At last, how-ever, comes the reward of all their soon as the wounds are healed, theirfriends get up a grand dance. As the cos-tume of the male dancers is nothing but thelittle apron of leaves which has been alreadymentioned, the pattern of the tattooing isfreely displayed; and the lads, now admittedamong the men, think
