Terra Nova Antarctic expedition. Group portrait from October 1911 of the Cape Evans shore party of the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913). Those absent include the cook Thomas Clissold (who was ill) and the photographer Herbert Ponting (taking the photograph). Also absent was the Northern Party of six men, led by Victor Campbell and exploring Victoria Land. Known as the Terra Nova Expedition, the primary objectives of the expedition were scientific. Led by Robert Falcon Scott, the shore party of 34 spent two seasons exploring on and around the Ross Ice Shelf. Scott and four others died in 1912 on their return from the South Pole.
