Behind the statue is the Rua Augusta Arch built to commemorate the city’s reconstruction after the 1755 earthquake. The Statue, by Portuguese sculptor Joaquim Machado de Castro (1731-1822), was unveiled on the King’s birthday in 1775 and is considered to be the first work of public art in Portugal.
