Tinklers were cer-tainly in Scotland prior to 1500, but it is still tobe proved that Romani-speaking Gypsies were,and so meantime we must regard the Tinklersas being the remnant of these ancient nomadicsmiths. It would be passing strange if it could beproved that some of the curious forms of Romaniwords, and even Romani words unknown to theEnglish Romani-speakmg Gypsies and still inuse amongst the Tinkler-Gypsies have beenbrought over by these ancient non)adic metal-workers of Hindu origin. The opinion, how-ever, above quoted of that eminent Gypsiolo-gist, Francis Hindes Groome, appears to be theone most strongly supported by the factsadduced, and there is so far not sufficientevidence to prove that such Romani wordswere not introduced by the wave
