Communicating witheach day room is a private room and a ward toilet; this latter alsocommunicates with the main ward, which is beyond, and occupiesthe entire end of the wing. Each day room accommodates fourbeds, and each main ward cares for ten. Beyond the ward is a sunporch, a broad two-storied portico, very open in construction, andlarge enough to accommodate all the patients in the SPRINGFIELD STATE HOSPITAL 539 The second floor of the north wing contains quarters for the staffand the three other wings are duplicates of those on the first floor. In the central octagon serving all these wings are the stairways,elevator and the diet kitchens. As all the corridors meet in theoctagonal hall at the crossing it is possible for one person stationedat this point to have the entire building within immediate and pos-itive control, he being in direct touch with the stairways, the eleva-tor service and the hospital staff. The third floor of the octagon continues up as a full story. Herethe operating department is located, complete, with its elevator andstair service, anaesthetizing room, wash room, operating room,sterilizing room, recovery room, laboratory and surgeons attic space over the wings is not utilized; it performs a valu-able service in protecting the second floor wards from undue he
