There is a small slit in the cork, that you pass the line in, to prevent it unwind- ing : as soon as the Jack or Pike seizes the bait, the line loosens, and runs from the groove of the cork free, and allows the Fish to retire to his haunt, and pouch at leisure. These floating trimmers are named, by some, the man-of-war trimmers, from the largeness of the cork j and, by others, fox-hounds; and may be purchased at all the principal fishing-tackle shops. Some use only a wisp of straw or rushes, and tie two or three yards of string to a baited hook, then throw the whole in the water, and often kill with a trimmer so rudely 1.
