Looking north west at the Upper Gate in western stretch of Conwy Town Walls, flanked by tower 13 above 'Watchtower' and 14 below, Edward I gained control of Conwy Valley in March 1283: started work on a new fortress to secure the estuary crossing, and enable safe delivery of supplies by sea. It replaced the earlier Castle at Deganwy and was virtually complete by the end of 1287 at a cost of over £14,000. The site had been occupied by a former palace of Llywelyn ap Gruffydd and the site of the Cistercian Abbey of Aberconwy. The abbey was moved 7m up the Conwy Valley to Maenan by 1284.
