Webb, who received the Navy Cross for actions while serving as a platoon commander in Vietnam, and Michael Desch, a professor of International Relations at the University of Notre Dame and the director of the Notre Dame International Security Center, recovered Hughes’ dog tag while conducting a battlefield study at the An Hoa airstrip in Vietnam. The dog tag was subsequently returned to the family of Cpl. Hughes, who passed away in 2019.
