An early morning scene in the massive opencast mine in Jalanur close to the Russian border in north eastern China. As recently as March 2009 - when this picture was made - the exhaust from up to a dozen steam locomotives could be seen and it was an unforgettable sight to watch them zagging in and out of the pit as they worked on the various levels
