Inthis design there would be nothing toloosen joint, but should it become leaky itis easily detected and repaired withoutwaiting for engine to cool down beforegoing to work. Of course, the pipe wouldnot be left bare, but would be coveredwith a good sectional FIG. 2. PROPOSED STEAM AND EXHAUST PIPES. ..n«»not -i-irtj.™ Steam and Exhaust Pipes. R. E. MARKS. Ive been thinking about steam pipes agood deal lately, probably because Ivehad lots of extra work from their comingloose or leaking, and it seems to me thereis a fine chance for improving severalthings about steam pipes, and incidentally, exhaust pipes as well. Take Fig. i and see the right hand pipe, the kind we use regularly. Is it any won-der they come loose and leak at the lowerjoint? Only wonder is they dont leak allow them to be cleaned more readilywhen they do clog. The draft is weakestin these flues and needs encouraging inevery way, as this will obviate some of thedifficulties now experienced from thiscause. One of my friends, who has also hadthe steam pipe disease to look after, sug-gests an even more radical change andbacks it up with pretty sound scheme is shown in Fig.
