Beached Sperm Whale at Beverwijk on 19 December 1601 by Jan Saenredam. This engraving records the actual beaching of a sperm whale. Its measurements are recorded at the bottom: 60 feet long by 14 feet high, with a circumference of 36 feet, the flukes 14 feet wide and the lower jaw of 12 feet long. These measurements put the whale towards the upper end of the known size of sperm whales and indicates that it may have weighed as much as 60 tons.
