The BLACKBUCK or INDIAN ANTELOPE (Antilope cervicapra). Although in former days nearly all the then known species ofantelopes were included in the genus Antilope, the extent of the latterhas been gradually whittled down until it now comprises the Indianblackbuck alone. In addition to being the sole representative of thegenus, this species is also the type of a subfamily or group ofantelopes, embracing the springbuck, gazelles, and gerenuk. These aresmall or medium-sized antelopes, with hairy muzzles, generally shorttails, and tall, narrow-crowned cheek-teeth, like those of sheep.
