The advantages of providing the odd generatingunit are several. Besides being able to more economicallysupply the night-lighting load for the yards, depots, etc., aswell as for any departments of the shop that might be requiredto operate at night for emergency work, this unit will also bevery useful for operation together with the large generatorswhen the total output of the station equals one and one-halfor two and one-half, times the capacity of one of the 400-K w. METHOD OF DRIVING THE TOOLS. The considerations which led up to the adoption of groupdriving for the operation of the greater number of the machinetools are particuladly important in view of the great interestthat IS, at present, being taken .in the question of power dis-tribution in machine shops. Owing to the nature of the loco-motive repair work, as it had been carried out at the Readingshops, the tools in the machine shop were what might ingeneral, be classed as light tools, and for this class of tools itwas considered that only in special cases could any advantagebe
