Peral submarine. 19th-century artwork of the Spanish Peral electric submarine on the surface at docks before submergence. This was the world's first submarine to be powered by electric batteries. It was designed by the Spanish engineer Isaac Peral (1851-1895). It was built at the Carraca shipyard, Cadiz, Spain, from October 1887, and launched on 8 September 1888. It was 22 metres long, had electric motors, two propellers, and a torpedo tube. Tests were successful, but the project ended in 1890. Artwork from the 4th volume (second period of 1889) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
