Astronomy research. 17th-century artwork of an apparatus used in astronomical research to measure the apparent size of the Sun and Moon. This artwork is from 'Astronomiae Pars Optica' (1604) by German mathematician, astronomer and astrologer Johannes Kepler (1571-1630). This work is considered the founding text in the science of optics. Kepler wrote about various topics in astronomy and optics, including the inverse-square law for light intensity, reflection, pinhole cameras, parallax, the apparent sizes of astronomical bodies, and the human eye.
