It has been asserted tliat the name, Jefferson^ originated in America,])ut that surmise had its origin in the mind of some ignorant pretender to aknowledge of the derivation of names. There was an ancient family ofthat name in Yorkshire, England, and, as late as 1720, there were one ormore persons bearing it in Boston, Massachusetts Bay, in New England. Thomas Jefferson, third President of United States,-was born on the 2dof April, (old style,) 1743, at Shad well, in Albemarle county, Virginia, sonof Mr. Peter Jefferson, a man of consequence in that province.
