Large panel in Cave 5 of Udayagiri Caves, depicting legend of Vishnu in his incarnation as man-boar Varaha, rescuing Bhudevi from the cosmic ocean
The Udayagiri Caves, one of India's most important archaeological sites, are twenty rock-cut caves in Madhya Pradesh, about 57 km from Bhopal, dating from the 5th century CE. They are notable for their ancient iconography of Vaishnavism (Vishnu), Shaktism (Durga and Matrikas) and Shaivism (Shiva). The incident of Varuha rescuing Bhudevi, finds mention in the ancient Vedic texts, Taittariya Samhita and Shatapatha Brahmana.
